Shan Shui Book #4 9312

Categories: , , ,

Shan Shui is a style of traditional ink painting depicting the intrinsic beauty of nature: landscapes such as mountains, rivers and waterfalls.  It typically uses a calligraphy brush and black ink, and more rarely colored hues. This concertina book, the images are captured with the impressions of the lotus stalk with ink made from sacred lotus flowers.

This book of Mountains and Rivers is of a mystical landscape. Made with  22 folded, concertina pages presented in a box, and a cover with a hand stitched lotus stalk in a blue line thread. When you unfold the pages, it reveals mountains that are prevalent through South East Asia.

As I am painting these works, I am taken back to the mountains, peaks and crevasses of the hypnotic topography of South East Asia. While you are looking at the scenery, it’s the mystic fog through the mountains that lets one look further into the distance to see what is hidden.  By looking at the unseen, it’s then that you can be transformed into another realm.

This is the fourth Shan Shui book I have created, and this one was made at various locations through Cambodia, even on the foot steps at a temple in Battambang and also in a 1000 year old Khmer temple.

Enjoy letting go, as you look into the unseen realm.
