Creating each of these paintings from thousands of meticulous impressions of lotus stems is but one facet of these works. Equally unique is the process of painstakingly brewing ink from charred lotus petals distilled in rainwater over long months and even years, resulting in a rare elixir to imbue my palette.
I envision my paintings ecologically and holistically, with Cambodian nature as the source. Lotus stems are my paintbrush, while its flowers create my tones.
Starting with a blank piece of paper, a fresh lotus flower and ink, my artwork commences with but one image from a cut lotus stem, then continues into hundreds and thousands of indelible marks. The shading and the density of these impressions produce undulating patterns.
It’s a new year, and my goal is to make
150,000 lotus impressions this year.
In 2018 I created my largest work,
1.7m square with a total of 20,184 lotus impressions.
1st of August 2017 I started noting my counts as part of my signature. My first signature was 580 lotus impressions. Then by the end of the year I had counted 54,059 impressions.
2017 also saw my first exhibition at Amansara in Siem Reap.
My vision began with a desire to create a single piece of art of a square by using something round.
This work had 49 lotus impressions.
